Pleasing God

do justiceIt isn’t complicated to please God. It may not always be easy, but it isn’t complicated. The beautiful part is that it does not rest entirely on us. God provides us with the tools and ability we need and the example of how to please Him.

The Old Testament prophet Micah states it plainly. Micah wonders what it takes to please God. He goes through a list of some of the common beliefs from his own time, burnt offerings, yearling calves, rams, oil, his son. Then he states that God “has told you, o man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

Simple. But not always easy. Justice and kindness (or mercy, as some version translate the Hebrew) are things we seek for ourselves but can at times be difficult for us to afford to others. Our own shortcomings and sin can keep us from demonstrating these things to others.

Micha realizes that and later in his book deals with that very issue. He realizes that he has sinned against God, as have we all. But he holds out hope that God does not hold on to anger, but instead, “delights in unchanging love,” and He will forgive us when we call on Him.

This week I’ll be sharing some passages from the book of Micah during Midday Prayer Time, around 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM.
