What We Owe

There are two types of evil. The evil around us and the evil within us. Or, at the very least, the propensity for evil within us.

what does God requireThat may be a difficult statement to agree with, at least the second half of it. Yet we are, under our power, incapable of good, the type of good that is good enough to please God. Thankfully, God provides, sending Jesus to pay our debt and wash us clean. Still, we are aware of the evil in the world and must constantly rely on God’s grace to keep us from being beguiled by it.

This is nothing new. Around 737 BC the Old Testament prophet Micah spoke and wrote about the evil in the world, and particularly in Judah and his own sins. He recounts corruption and evil in government, people “trolling” one another and a growing proficiency and pride in committing evil.

Micah writes that you could not even trust your neighbor or the members of your own family. Evil seems to not only be prospering, but winning.

He talks about how to appease God in light of such rampant sin and evil. He goes through a list of some of the common beliefs from his own time, burnt offerings, yearling calves, rams, oil, his son. But then he states that God “has told you, o man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

So there was hope for Micah and for us. And there is a promise and expectation. He writes, “But as for me, I will watch expectantly for the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me.”

“He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in unchanging love. He will tread our iniquities under foot. Yes, You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.”

For the next two weeks during Middays Prayer Time, around 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM, I’ll be sharing from the Old Testament book of Micah.
