Blessed Are Those

Rio mountain topI remember quite some time ago sitting in a Bible study at a coffee house and reading from Matthew chapter 5, the Beatitudes. Someone said, “Which of these is you,” to no one in particular. I thought about it for a moment and replied with another question, “How can you be any of these without being all of them? Or to put it another way, if there is one of these that doesn’t describe you then none of them do.”

As with many of these types of lists in the Bible, the Ten Commandments, the Fruit of the Spirt and so on, I believe that to embrace and obey and demonstrate one of the aspects in the list demands adherence to the list in total. Or, again to put it another way, if you mess up one item on the list you’ve messed up the whole list. There is no picking and choosing.

Look at the list. Poor in spirit, those who mourn, the gentle (or meek or humble, depending on the translation), those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers. Without mercy you can’t be a peacemaker. Seeking for righteousness without a pure heart? Unlikely. You see what I’m getting at here?

The Beatitudes isn’t a range of traits, it’s a description of a single personality. Surely it describes Jesus Himself. The hope is that it also describes each one of us as we seek to become more like the Savior.
