Billy Crockett Thankful Boys And Girls

Billy CrockettI remember Billy Crockett as a friendly, soft spoken young man. He was quick to flash a smile. I only met him a few times, usually in pretty large groups. He seemed content to stay in the background, not jostling for much attention. But his thoughtful lyrics, tender voice and masterful guitar work sure caught my attention.

Billy was one of the most under rated singer/songwriters of the mid-1980s through the 1990s, a span of about 15 years where he consistently placed a couple of singles from each of 9 albums on the Christian radio charts.

As I read back over those first two paragraphs I realize that I’ve written about Billy in the past tense, almost like he’s no longer with us. He is still very much alive, and still writing and recording and producing other artists’ records, after taking about a seven-year break.

Billy’s album, “Carrier,” was released in 1984. His most recent, “Rabbit Hole,” was released in 2016 on his own label, Blue Rock. In all he has released 10 solo albums.

He started the label as part of the Blue Rock Artist Ranch and Studio that he opened with his wife Dodie. It’s located in the Texas hill country and serves as a retreat as well as state-of-the-art studio facility for artists and songwriters.

Billy Crockett's "Red Bird, Blue Sky" albumAs I went back and listened to some of Billy’s music I was amazed by how well it holds up. His lyrics are thoughtful and the music is pure art. He’s in the ranks of many of the other singer/songwriters I’ve featured in this space in the past year and a half; people like Bob Bennett, Chris Rice, Wes King, Susan Ashton and many more. I hope you have an opportunity to revisit the music these people have blessed us with.

From the 1995 “Red Bird @ Blue Sky” here’s “Thankful Boys And Girls.”

Also from that album, “The Wake Up Song.”
