It’s been 30 years since the song “Awesome God” by Rich Mullins was released. People are still singing it today. It, arguably, helped to usher in the modern praise and worship movement, though Mullins was not what you could call a praise and worship artist.
Rich, who would pass away less than 10 years after this song came out, reportedly wrote “Awesome God” while driving by himself late at night somewhere between Tennessee and Missouri on his way to do a concert in Colorado. The story goes that stay awake Rich took on the persona of an old “hellfire and brimstone” preacher and began shouting out the phrases that would become “Awesome God” to the night air.
The song was first included on the 1998 album “Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth.” It was Rich’s third album. That LP was placed 31st on the 2001 “CCM Magazine” 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music. The song took 1st place on that publication’s 2006 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music list.

“If you want a religion that makes sense, I suggest something other than Christianity. But if you want a religion that makes life, then I think this is the one.” Rich Mullins
I managed to find a video of Rich performing “Awesome God” live.
