There are things that are not in our control. We realize this, to an extent. But when time get dark we often find ourselves worrying, scheming, striving to put things right on our own. We do this individually and we do this as groups. Companies, churches, families, even nations often find themselves seeking a way to control that which was never, will never be under their control.
Ancient Israel often found itself in this type of situation. Surrounded by hostile nations, in danger of attack, the people and rulers worried and feared. Yet all of those efforts were for nothing. The author of Psalm 46 understood the fruitlessness of worry and fear. And he knew how to silence it, “Cease striving and know that I am God.” That simple yet difficult change of attitude is all we need to silence those fears and doubts.
In our darkest times we can know hope, peace and joy when we understand and rest in the truth that “The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.”
