Highlights For The Week Of August 7, 2017

Good-Bye Glen Campbell
On Tuesday, August 8, Glen Campbell passed away. Glen’s music transcended labels. Several of his songs were bona fide hits on country and pop radio. He was also a man of faith and recorded several Christian music albums. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2011. I had the opportunity to spend a day with Glen in October 1991. I shared some of those memories on air and here. I saved one video for this Highlights post, it’s the “official” music video for Glen’s 1969 hit “Galveston.”

Perseid Meteor Shower
Every August the earth passes through the trail of dust and debris left behind the Comet Swift-Tuttle, causing the annual Perseid Meteor Shower. This weekend it will be at its peak with meteors, or shooting stars, visible to the naked eye.

Pizza Squirrel
Grant Park in Atlanta has a new unofficial attraction, Pizza Squirrel. The squirrel was spotted by an employee of Grant Park Conservancy.

Robo Call Brian
Here’s an example of a robo call trying to get me to say “yes.” Some of these calls record your conversation and then edit them so it sounds like you’ve actually ordered something from them. The trick, NEVER say “yes” or “OK.” Better yet, don’t answer calls from numbers you don’t recognize.

Underprivileged Kids
The JOY FM BEJOY Backpacks is set for Tuesday August 29. Get all of the details here. We’re inviting you to make a difference for some very special kids right here in our own communities. For many of these children the only meals they get are free breakfast and lunch at school. That means that over the weekend they often go hungry. The need is real, as demonstrated by this recent report from

Solar Eclipse
We have the Perseid Meteor Shower this weekend, and then on Monday August 21 it’s a total solar eclipse. Find out the peak viewing time for you zip code with an interactive map here.

Grocery Store Style
Last weekend my wife, Teri, and I were doing some grocery shopping. I saw five young ladies (one mom or aunt and four daughters and/or nieces) and two of them were wearing The JOY FM T-shirts. I had to stop them and get a photo.
