In 1994 Sparrow Records had three of the top female vocalists in Christian music under contract, Susan Ashton, Margaret Becker and Christine Dente of Out of the Grey. Someone at the label came up with the inspired idea to have the three of them record an album together. I don’t know who that person is, but I hope they got a raise.
“Along The Road,” the album, was released on September 20, 1994. Each of the singers handled lead vocals on four of the 12 songs and did backing vocals on the rest. Oddly, for such a prolific trio of songwriters, each contributed only one writing credit to the album, and none of those were solo credits. Album producer Wayne Kirkpatrick penned, in whole or in part, for of the tunes and Billy Sprague is listed on three. The title track was written by Dan Fogelberg and included on his 1979 album “Phoenix.”
This is one of my all-time favorite collaborative projects, and it still stands up today. The label didn’t produce any concept videos from this project, but I did manage to find two fan-generated videos, one for “Taking My Time,” which was written by Christine Dente and Charlie Peacock. Christine does lead vocals.
The other is for the title track, “Along The Road,” with Margaret Becker singing lead.
