Sisters Erica Atkins-Campbell and Trecina “Tina” Atkins-Campbell grew up with seven other siblings in Inglewood, CA singing in church. They studied classical voice at El Camino College and toured as backup singers for a number of R&B acts, including Brandy.
They signed a publishing deal with EMI and their songs were performed by a number of artists, including Yolanda Adams, and appeared in movies like “Dr. Dolittle” and “The Prince of Egypt.” They signed a recording contract with Columbia Records and released their first album as Mary Mary (in honor of Mary the mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene), “Thankful,” in 2000. It contained the hit “Shackles (Praise You).”
They continue to write, record and perform. Thought they did take a bit of a hiatus to record solo projects. They were also the subject of a long-running reality TV series on WEtv, “Mary Mary.” See the show’s website here.
Erica and Tina’s maiden names is Atkins. They each married someone with the last name of Campbell, though their husbands are not related.
Mary Mary has won 4 Grammy Awards and been nominated 11 times. Their first Grammy was for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album for “Thankful.” From that album here’s their first single, “Shackles (Praise You).”
