The Tongue Is A Fire

No one can tame the tongueWe have two ears, two eyes and only one tongue. You’ve heard it said, I’m sure, that we should use them accordingly, listening and watching more than speaking. Of all of the muscles in the human body none has the power to heal, to comfort, to encourage as the tongue. Conversely, no other muscle can wreak such damage; inflict as much pain as the tongue.

The Bible is full of references to the tongue and the power it holds for both good and evil. Of course we realize that it isn’t actually the tongue itself that pronounces good or evil, but, as Jesus explained in Matthew 15, the things that come out of our mouths come from our hearts and often defile us. The tongue is used figuratively as the source of these things to demonstrate the power of our words which are the outward expression of what is in our hearts, whether meant for good or evil.

So when James states, “No one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison,” he’s really saying that the evil within us is expressed through our speech. He goes on to say that with the same tongue, “We bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.”

So we seek wisdom, we seek understanding; we seek to master our tongues. The fact that so many places in both the Old and New Testaments warn us of its power shows us the gravity of the need to govern our tongues, our speech, our thoughts, our hearts. I don’t know of anyone who has mastered this skill. And those who are most nearly successful at it haven’t gotten that way without help. This is an area where we need to daily ask the Lord for assistance.
