Have you ever known someone to brag about something or take credit for something that they had nothing to do with? Now, I’m not talking about someone who steals credit for something that someone else did, though that is despicable. I’m talking about someone who boasts or solicits compliments about something like the color of their eyes or how tall they are. Something that they did not, could not influence in the least.
Sometimes those of who call Jesus “Lord” can be like that. Especially when confronted the actions of those who make no claim to salvation. Paul warns about becoming like that. In Ephesians 2 he writes that we also were once “dead in your trespasses and sins, we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging he desires of the flesh and of the mind.”
He then goes on to remind us that we were set from those things by God’s great love for us expressed in Jesus. “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
The world today is in bad shape. And for those of us who seek God’s will, enjoy His grace, it can be easy to look down on those who do not know God. This temptation we must flee from. “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”
When faced with evil and sin we should seek to do the good that God has prepared for us to do.
