There have been times throughout history when people were open to the Gospel, to hearing of God’s great love demonstrated through the work of Jesus. The times we find ourselves in at the present are not among those.
Paul tells Timothy, in chapter four of the second letter bearing his name, that regardless of times he must be ready to preach the Word “in season and out of season.” We are currently “out of season.” Yet that makes it all the more crucial to share the Gospel.
It is not easy. Paul warns Timothy that he will endure hardship, yet he must “fulfill your ministry.” Paul knew about hardship. As he wrote to Timothy he reached the point in his own life where, as Paul describes it, “the time of my departure has come.”
He used what lay now so very near in his own life to encourage Timothy. “There is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will ward to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who loved His appearing.”
