Steve and Da'dra, AnointedFrom the mid-1990s through the beginning of the next century the brother and sister duo of Steve and Da’dra Crawford were breaking down barriers in Christian music as the group Anointed. Originally a foursome with Mary Tiller (who left in 1995) and Nee-C Walls (who left in 2001), Anointed crafted a style that fused pop, R&B, rock, funk and piano ballads and crossed musical formats.

Anointed charted on Contemporary Christian and Urban Gospel radio. They have won seven Dove Awards, two Stellar Awards and have been nominated three times for the Grammy Awards. Their first album, “Spiritual Love Affair,” came out in 1993 when both Steve and Da’dra were still in high school. They followed that up with  “The Call,” in 1995 which yielded three charting singles, “The Call,” “Not The I But The You In Me” and “Send Out A Prayer.”

In 1996 Anointed, now a trio after the departure of Mary Tiller, released the album “Under The Influence.” That project included “Under The Influence,” “The Call” and “Adore You.”

Under The Influence coverIt was 1999 when they came out with “Anointed” and gained even more chart success with the singles “Revive Us” and ”Godspot.” After an extensive tour in support of “Anointed” Steve and Da’dra took a few years off. They came back, as a duo with the departure of Nee-C Walls, in 2001 with “If We Pray.” This album did not generate the same multi-format attention of their previous albums. The next year Anointed left Word Records and signed with the Sony Urban label and continued to record until 2005.

At the height of their commercial success Anointed did release several music videos.

Here’s the video for the 1996 “Under The Influence.”

And from 1995 here’s “The Call.”
