Serving Others

"For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many." Mark 10:45 (NLT)

Be Joy Backpacks at Carrollton“Be Joy Backpack” day was this Tuesday afternoon at several Chick-fil-A locations where it was brilliantly sunny and very hot! Despite the heat and your busy schedule, you came to serve hungry children because all of the food and money donated went straight to a food bank in your community that fills backpacks and sends them home with children each weekend.

Hundreds of your children came along with you carrying plastic bags full of food. Many of the children were just old enough to understand they were giving to children just like them who need food. One little girl wanted to give away her afternoon snack saying, “I’m not hungry right now so can someone else finish my applesauce?” Even though that wasn’t quite the idea, her childlike faith shows us the purest form of selflessness.

Scripture is full of examples of Jesus serving others - from going out of His way to talk to the woman at the well, to healing lepers, to washing His disciples' feet, to the ultimate sacrifice of giving His life. A miracle happens when we give like Jesus; He fills us with His joy and the desire to give more and more. We begin to look for other ways to serve the people around us at work, in our community, and even in our home. It’s a good kind of addiction … serving others and considering others as better than ourselves. The next time we begin thinking of serving our needs first, let’s remember this anagram for experiencing true J-O-Y!

J – Jesus (serve Jesus first and keep Him at the center of everything you do.)
O- Others (serve others and consider their needs above your own.)
Y- You (When your life is spent on Jesus and others, your life will be filled with true joy.)
