Preparing New Graduates To Make Wise Decisions

GraduatesAre you getting ready to send a child out into the world? Whether it’s college, technical training or straight to a job, as parents you want them to make wise, Godly choices. Trey and I feel the same way about our son Thomas.

As I think about our son leaving for the University of Alabama in August, a lot of feelings flood my thoughts. Excited. Proud. Terrified. Sad. But mostly I feel HOPE for his future. I love him to the moon and back and I have no misconception that he is perfect. That being said, the thing I’m most worried about is making sure he remembers to have the utmost respect for women.

Here are two things you and I can do to prepare our young men or women to remember wisdom when faced with all kinds of choices:

1. Of course, the Word of God. There are hundreds of chapters and verses to choose from about making decisions. A great example is Proverbs 3. Here’s an excerpt from verses 21 – 23. “My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble.”

2. Another great idea is watching the movie “Priceless” from the Christian band For King & Country. After watching the movie, there are several videos from the band that talk about respect for women and making a decision to do the right thing before you’re in a comprising situation. I share one of those videos below.

I understand that you and I can prepare and mistakes can still happen. That’s where God’s grace and our love for our children come in. Of course a lot of prayer and trust that Jesus has them in the palm of His mighty hand is also comforting. So let’s pray.
