Open Mouth--Insert Foot

feetBeing in radio for more than 35 years, I’ve had plenty of opportunity to open mouth…insert foot! The biggest instance of “my big mouth” getting me in trouble happened several years ago at Winter Jam in the Georgia Dome. I had the audacity to say “Roll Tide” from the stage because my team just won the National Championship, and that stage was in Georgia. What was I thinking? I might as well have said, “I have no respect for you or your favorite football team.” I still have flashbacks of that moment, and I am filled with regret.

The point Andy Stanley makes with the “Me & My Big Mouth” series is that our words are powerful. Our mouths have more destructive power than any other part of the body. The good news is that our mouth also has the power to help, encourage, and teach others about Jesus. I, for one, am very thankful that God gives us a new chance every day, His mercies are new every morning.

Even though our mouths get us in trouble from time to time, there are plenty of scriptures meant to help us conquer the scariest organ in our body. I hope at least one or two of the following verses help us exercise wisdom before speaking in the future.

Speak no evil1 Peter 3:10 explains, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech."

Colossians 3:6 advices, “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone."

Proverbs15:1-2 says, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.”

There are at least 24 more verses about our tongue. Our mouths can be the most difficult thing to control and leave us with great regret if we use our words to hurt. There is hope! The Bible tells us that with the help of the Holy Spirit we can have power and control over our tongue. Read the above Bible verses about the tongue and be encouraged to start speaking words of life and healing today!
